CAN DOGS EAT MANGO?

If you’ve been enjoying the delicious sweetness of a tropical mango and ever wondered “can dogs eat mango?” the answer is: yes.

Mangos are perfectly safe for dogs to consume and they’re likely to be a hit with your pup thanks to the natural sugars and dessert-like taste.

ARE MANGOS GOOD FOR DOGS?

Not only do they taste good but mangos are also a healthy and nutritious whole food option when considering “snacks” for dogs.

Packed with fiber, vitamin C, B6, A and E your dog will be getting plenty of essential vitamins from a slice or two of fresh mango.

Any whole food containing high fiber amounts is usually a great swap (due to the satiating effects of fiber) for commercially produced dog treats and mangos definitely fit the bill!

CAN DOGS EAT DRIED MANGO?

Dried mango or dehydrated mango is also safe for dogs. The one caveat being if the dried fruit has additional ingredients.

If you’re purchasing dried mango from a store, read the label to make sure there aren’t added sugars or preservatives. Often, both of these are added to commercially produced dried fruit.

Making dried mango at home, however, is incredibly simple. Using a dehydrator (like in our eggplant jerky recipe), you can dry fruit yourself and control the ingredients.

If feeding your dog dried mango, there should be just one ingredient: mango.

ARE THERE ANY DANGERS TO FEEDING MY DOG MANGO?

There are two potential dangers when it comes to giving dogs mango: the mango skin and the mango pit. Just like when feeding a dog guava, these should be avoided.

Mango skin, while not toxic is something that can be harder for a dog to digest and should be avoided. It’s best to peel the skin off using a vegetable peeler or scoop the flesh out of the skin when feeding it to your dog.

The mango pit can be a choking hazard if the whole fruit is given to a dog. If swallowed, the pit could potentially cause intestinal blockage. It actually contains cyanide (just like cherries) as well so it’s best to avoid it altogether.

If your dog accidentally swallows a mango pit, keep a close eye. Chances are it will pass without issue but if you notice any adverse symptoms especially any indicating an intestinal blockage, contact your vet immediately.

HOW TO SERVE MANGO TO DOGS

Once peeled and cut away from the pit, mango can be served in a variety of ways for your dog to enjoy.

  • Freshly sliced or cubed mango can be given with their food.
  • Dried or dehydrated mango can be given as “jerky” and is great for snacks during a hike or other activity.
  • Frozen mango slices or cubes are a great sweet treat on a hot day.
  • This 5 minute mango frozen yogurt can even be made for both humans and dogs. Leave off the pistachio crumble for the pups but the frozen yogurt itself is a great canine treat!

As always, treats, even wholesome fruits like mango and unsweetened applesauce should be given in moderation and not exceed 10% of your dog’s caloric intake. For a larger dog, this is only about 1/4 cup.

Any treat should only be considered alongside a nutritious and balanced diet.

Because of their higher natural sugar levels, mangos may not be the best choice for dogs with diabetes. Stick to lower starch vegetables like fennel, asparagus and cauliflower instead.
