12 Big Dogs That Think They’re Lap Dogs

Some oversized dogs are absolutely convinced they belong in your lap, no matter how little sense that makes. They lean, sprawl, and climb aboard with total confidence, acting like they weigh about ten pounds instead of well over one hundred. These giant cuddle bugs may take up all your space, but they make up for it with a lot of affection and a complete lack of self-awareness.

Mastiffs are among the biggest dogs around, and some can easily top 200 pounds. In their minds, though, that is no reason to skip cuddle time. They happily press all that weight against you and settle in like they are doing you a favor. Their calm, affectionate nature makes them especially determined to stay close.

Boxers are powerful, energetic dogs that usually weigh between 55 and 70 pounds. Even with all that muscle, they often behave like oversized puppies who belong wherever you are sitting. They launch themselves into your space with zero hesitation and endless enthusiasm. Their goofy, loving personalities make the whole thing hard not to laugh at.

Leonbergers are huge, fluffy dogs that can weigh anywhere from 90 to 170 pounds. Their size does not stop them from acting like your lap is exactly where they belong. Once they decide it is cuddle time, you are basically pinned under a wall of fur. They are sweet, playful, and completely unconcerned with how much room they take up.

Rottweilers have a strong, sturdy build and can weigh up to 135 pounds, but that does not make them any less affectionate. Underneath the serious look is a dog that loves being right next to its favorite people. Many of them will climb into your lap as if they are small enough to fit comfortably. Their loyal, clingy side tends to override all common sense.

Irish Wolfhounds are towering dogs that can stand over 30 inches tall and weigh close to 180 pounds. For some reason, many of them still think they are built for lap lounging. They drape their long limbs across you and settle in with total confidence. Their gentle temperament makes them eager for closeness, even when their size says otherwise.

Bernese Mountain Dogs usually weigh between 80 and 115 pounds, and they are famous for being sweet, affectionate companions. They love staying close to their people and often try to turn that closeness into a full-body cuddle. If there is a lap nearby, they are more than willing to test whether it can hold them. Their gentle nature makes the whole squishing experience feel surprisingly endearing.

Dobermans are sleek, athletic dogs that often weigh between 60 and 100 pounds. They are known for loyalty and closeness, which can translate into some very determined lap time. A Doberman will curl up against you like a much smaller dog and act like this arrangement makes perfect sense. They are affectionate enough to make you overlook the extra weight.

Great Dane

Great Danes are some of the most famous gentle giants, often weighing between 140 and 175 pounds. Even so, many of them behave like they could fit neatly into your lap. They drop down with complete confidence and turn every cuddle into a test of your balance and circulation. Their affectionate personalities make them want to be as close as possible all the time.

Weimaraners are athletic dogs that usually weigh between 55 and 90 pounds, and they are notorious for being attached to their people. Personal space is not really their thing. They often climb right onto you and settle in like they are still tiny puppies. Their needy, affectionate streak makes them one of the most persistent large-breed snugglers.

Saint Bernard

Saint Bernards can weigh up to 180 pounds, but that rarely stops them from seeking out maximum snuggle contact. These big-hearted dogs love leaning, pressing, and sprawling into the people they love most. The result is usually a lot of fur, a little drool, and absolutely no room left for you. They may be enormous, but emotionally they are still cuddle-first dogs.

Bullmastiff

Bullmastiffs are hefty dogs that often weigh between 100 and 130 pounds. In spite of that, they have a soft, clingy side that makes them want to sit as close as possible. Many of them will park themselves right on top of you and seem genuinely pleased with this decision. Their relaxed, loving temperament makes them expert lap invaders.

Newfoundlands are giant, fluffy dogs that can weigh 150 pounds or more, yet many are convinced they are ideal lap companions. When they settle onto you, it feels less like a cuddle and more like being pinned by a very affectionate cloud. They are famously sweet and gentle, which only makes the whole thing more amusing. Size means very little to a dog that just wants to be close.
