How to Bell Train a Dog

Bell training is a practical & effective method to teach your dog to communicate their need to go outside for potty breaks.

By associating the sound of a bell with going outside, you can empower your pup to let you know when nature calls.

Bell training is known as "operant conditioning."

It's helpful to start by teaching your dog to go to the bathroom on command.

Using a clicker or treats as a reward can expedite the process.

Let the dog acclimate to the bell by sniffing & investigating. Reward this behavior.

Start at the door with the bell hung at your dog's level.

Allow the dog to gently nudge the bell then immediately take him outside using your chosen command such as "potty."

Always keep the dog on leash when starting so they cannot go off sniffing, etc.
